This bag was made by the KOJIMA women's cooperative in Fandriana, Madagascar. Being a part of KOJIMA provides income to single women experiencing homelessness in a way that uses local and sustainable materials. KOJIMA artists harvest raffia, a locally growing and regenerating Malagasy grass, and dye it with local plants like cassava. The raffia is dried, dyed, and woven into the intricate pieces you see here. We buy these pieces from the artists at prices they set themselves, no questions asked, and share them with you. If you like what you see, make sure to purchase an item or two so we can continue this partnership!

Pronounced like "foosa," the fosa is the largest mammalian carnivore in Madagascar. It looks almost, but not quite, like a cat or a really big ferret. You may recognize the fosa from the animated movie of Madagascar!
